From time to time I will get asked the question “If I use a subdomain can I get that ranked with my regular domain url in the SERP (search engine results page)”
Absolutely, subdomains can help. They can be a source of great inbound links to your primary domain. They can be additional information that you can build a theme of content around your Web site.
But beware of duplicate content. If you post the same content on the primary domain as well as your subdomain, you’ll get penalized for duplicate content. Just like http://www.xyz.com and xyz.com count as two Web pages, your subdomain.xyz.com can also be another “Web site” and if you dupe the content, it will hurt your rankings.

Thomas,
Thanks for bring up the point about duplicate content. It’s always a great point to remember.
